As a media and communication major my time at MUM has been about people, stories, and emotions. I’ve written circles and circles around what I’ve been through, am going through and what I’d like to go through. I’ve asked myself a hundred times over, what does it all mean? I’ve connected with all kinds of characters: The quite shy and wise The eccentric and energetic The mad genius The ambitious stoics The emotional goddess
And the list goes on and on, I’ve learned so much from every person I’ve met and have been lucky to receive ample amounts of love and support, which is what has given me the courage to come to Hawaii in the first place.
Here in Hawaii, I am learning from a much deeper state of understanding, a very personal and experiential one. I feel like the hero who has entered a new world.
A world where the land talks and when I am still and quiet enough, I can hear it very clearly. I’ve been blessed enough to realize that the answers in life are always right here in front of us and by silencing our mind, opening our eyes and seeing with our hearts the truth will prevail.

Many people were asking me why? Why are you going to Hawaii for a Sustainable Living Program when you are a media major?
And the answer to this is because I am human. Because I desire to connect with something bigger than myself, something bigger than all of its parts and that something, in this case, is mother earth.
In my time here she has taught me to trust myself through trial and error, to not get so caught up in the questions of the mind but to feel the answers of the heart. She has taught me to connect with my true self and others on new levels changing my life and my stories forever. She has once again guided me to teachers, allies, and acquaintances that are preparing me along my path and though I may not know where I will end I do know that this chapter has been a pivotal one. I now feel it in my heart that I am here to make a difference, I am here to protect what it is true and what is life. I am here to learn, understand and live the lessons of ancestral knowledge which resonate with who I am, be it Native Hawaiian, Vedic, or other historical understandings and teachings that share the innate knowing that we are all connected to each other and to the earth, that everything we need is already here and WE ARE provided for.

So please join me on this adventure take some time to stop, be silent, and listen to the world around you. I have already begun the transformative process in this semester in Hawaii and I know it has only just begun. Being a pioneer paving the path for all the future heroes of our planet is a gift I am grateful to have humbly accepted.
